Place Values up to Thousands

In second grade you learned about Ones and Tens place values.

There are only 10 digits in all of math:

0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

When counting, what comes after 9? π€

Yes, it's **10!** π We add a **second digit.**

But why is it **10 **and not **01**? π€

π Because in math, we always write the **Tens **place **left **(π) of the Ones place.

The digit **1 **is in the **Tens place, **and the digit **0 **is in the **Ones **place.

Let's look at the number **37**.

Which digit is in the **Tens **place?

How much is that digit worth?

π Since each **Ten **is equal to **10 Ones, **3 Tens equals **30 **Ones**. β

We can use Tens and Ones to describe numbers as big as 99.

But what happens when we want to count above 99?

πWe add another digit! It goes in the **hundreds place.**

Whenever we count up and get to 10 Tens, we regroup them into **1 Hundred**.

10 Tens = 1 Hundred

That's why 90 + 10 = 100.

We write the **Hundreds **place to the **left **(π) of the Tens.

**Tip:** Bigger place values always go on the **left **(π):

Now you know that:

10 Ones = 1 Ten

10 Tens = 1 Hundred
